Map of UK showing operational areaNith Inshore Rescue is based in Glencaple, where the River Nith (on which Dumfries stands) meets the Solway Firth.  Our main area of operations is the tidal water of the Nith and its estuary, from Powfoot near Annan in the east to the holiday village of Southerness in the west, together with inland lochs and rivers.  We have been called to incidents as far afield as Castle Douglas, Thornhill, Moffat and Carlisle.  We work closely with other lifeboats and Coastguard units on both sides of the Solway.

The Solway Firth has the second largest tidal range in the UK.  During spring tides, more water rushes in and out of the Solway than anywhere else in the UK apart from the Bristol Channel.

The many sandbanks, mudflats and quicksands, and the constantly changing channels, mean it can be dangerous for anyone unprepared, ill-equipped or foolhardy.

So enjoy yourself safely!  Before venturing anywhere near the water, we'd recommend a look at the Coastguard and RoSPA water-safety websites.
