Nith Inshore Rescue is recognised as a front-line operational marine rescue unit by HM Coastguard and call-outs are activated by pager either from the Marine Search and Rescue Centre at Liverpool or from the local coastguard sector office at Kirkcudbright.  The police also use our services (via the Coastguard), for example in missing person searches.  Ours is a rural area and the human population are not the only ones who get into difficulties: a significant number of rescues involve farm animals.  For a heart-warming story, read "Bryn - a collie's tale".

Last year we were called out 25 times (see figures for last 5 years).
